A:

It is my understanding that any mammal can get rabies under the right circumstances.  Even the common carriers, (bats, rodents, marsupials) can suffer from full fledged hydrophobia when the virus is introduced into the bloodstream through a wound or bite.  It affects the central nervous system when bloodbourne.  The carriers have the virus in their saliva and therefore do not exhibit any symptoms or ill effects until something happens that it enters the blood and is distributed throughout the body.
