Having an inbox for private messages would indeed be useful. It's currently not part of our next releases but we will add it to the pool of ideas we get from the community (A list in which you're one of the leaders no doubt :) and consider it when prioritising our next vesions.

As for confirming a private message has been recieved... It's up to us to make sure the message is delivered. When you send an message you should do so knowing that it's been directed to that person. Lately we had a few reports of private messages that havan't reached their destination. We identified the problem and solved it.
