 Theres a sierial number on the block. I think on a GM 305 it's on the back of the block up by the intake maifold seperation point. You can reference the number. It will give you the when and where it was made.

 The dealer has the information. some of the bigger branch libraries has good auto referance meterials.

 And I'm sure there's more on line.
