We have a sewer line that has a manhole cover ...

We have a sewer line that has a manhole cover buried about 3 ft under the ground, which is directly below our concrete driveway. The utility decided to bury it when we built the house so we wouldn't have a manhole cover in the middle of our driveway. Now, the sewer line is controlled by the city (it was controlled by the county before), and they want to raise the manhole cover to the top, which means tearing up my driveway & installing the manhole cover in my concrete driveway. Is there any way I can prevent them from doing this? Thanks.

Check your deed and see if you have an easement there.  If there is no easement, you can probably fight it and make them move the manhole out to the street.

Thanks Profitbob for the reply, althought the manhole is in my front yard I do believe we may have an easement area that goes so many feet up into my yard.  We are checking that more thoroughly to be sure.  Thanks.
