Are unions good or bad for the workers they represent and why?

They always have their members best interests as their primary goal, however this is not always the best option for all of the individual members at that exact time. Overall a union gives the employees maximum power for minimum effort when negotiating employment conditions with the employer.

7 thumbs up

Having been involved in labor unions for the past 31 years, there are both pros and cons to a labor union.  The pros:  unions will negotiate for good wages, health benefits, vacation time and working conditions, e.g. safety.  The cons:  labor unions are required by law to provide equal job protection to all members and must also represent non members.  There are some employees who do not deserve to keep their jobs and should be fired......I have seen other employees have to do the work of deadbeats, yet the unions will protect them at all costs.  I have also seen outrageous demands made by unions that hurt the very company that employs the workers.  In a nutshell, labor unions do serve a purpose, but unions also have a down side.
