Actually I'm already familiar with Japanese saws and I've been using them for over a year now. I have no problems with 1/2" or 3/4" thick stock.
But when I tried to rip saw 2" thick board, 3' long, I couldn't saw to the line and in the end I discovered the cut was also skewed. I was wondering if this is to do with my technique or should I use a different saw.
Anyway, your remark about adopting a posture that "puts your shoulder directly in line with the cut" is interesting. I'll try it.
