It is normally found just across from the left kidney.

The kidney indicated by label in the diagram is the left kidney.

The kidney is a retroperitoneal organ, meaning that it lies outside of the area that contains the stomach, intestines, liver, spleen, and womb. The top of the bone that is just under the kidney is the ilium; the top of this bone is referred to as the iliac crest.
