Hi! I think you have a number of choices!
But first why don't you start off your dinner with a sparkling! I would recommend one that is high in Pinot Noir and Pinot Munier and less Chardonnay, as the fruitiness will work well withth e meal should some be left over when it is time to dine!
As you move to a wine with the pasta, I would personally like to stay with Italian and keep the experience authentic. There is a great bottle called Vesevo Taurasi made from Aglianico grapes that are nothing short of Yummy! The 2001 is on the shelves now and drinking wonderfully!
You could try another Aglianico, but I would suggest caution and try it before opening it with a nice dinner and friends. Another suggestion would be a Spanish wine. I personally like Garnacha and Mencia. You should go to your local retailer and find out what they carry... feel free to ping me if you need assistance.
Last , I would consider a zinfandel, Joel Gott and Klinkerbrick are among the best this year and should be $13 and $14 respectively.
