Is there a way to make Windows ME more stable without installing a newer OS?

No. I am sorry, but ME is the worst version of windows there is. (it is know as Mistake Editon), you best bet would be to install a new OS on a fresh reformat. But not Vista, becasue if your computer is running ME in the first place it will most likely not be able to run any thing better than Xp. If upgradeing is not in the picture consitter down gradeing to WinNT 2000 or maby even 98, eather of the two would be better than ME. so in other words, stop useing ME ASAP.

Windows ME is probably the worst edition of windows ever created.

Making it more stable is impossible, but you can make your life better by upgrading your memory. The best tip for you would be to install Windows 2000 which is not so bad (although compared to winME everything is not so bad) or even windows 98. Just don't  stay with ME.

The DOS descended Windows 9x OS family is inherently unstable by its very architecture. If it's stability you seek, then you should consider moving over to the Windows NT code base [descended] Windows 2000, or Windows XP. If your hardware doesn't support either of these products, and/or you don't feel like forking over the cash for either an upgrade or full product version of these products, then you can take a look at Linux...
