My wife is going on to long term disability and cobra. My college student stepson is on her employer health insurance. Can I add him to my health insurance, but not her? Cobra costs are too expensive for a family

Helping people to get rid of Hemroids.

You cannot add him to your insurance, I am not sure if that is permissible.

Be Blessed.

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity (Love), I am become as a sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vauneth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seekth not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth.

And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is (Love) charity.

David,

Check with the insurance department in your personnel office. Dependent children under the age of 25 are generally covered if they are living at home or if they are in school. If she is the custodial parent and you are the stepfather there should not be a problem. You will probably be able to add him because there is a life changing event involved. You will not have to wait until open enrollment. You just need to check with your insurance department as to what age a dependent child is covered to. I spent 34 years in the insurance industry.

Be Blessed and I hope everything works out.

David,

You probably need to shop around to the different companies to see who has the plan for the best rates. However, you may want to stay on your employer group plan because it would probably be cheaper, since your employer pays a certain amount of your premium. I would also look at the difference in cost of you having a family plan with your wife included on it, as opposed to having a 2 person plan with your son and yoursef, leaving your wife to pay for a seperate cobra plan. Maybe if you changed to a family plan, you could save the money you would be paying cobra for your wife. I would compare the two to see which way would be better.

I hope this made sense.

Wink  Headphones: you can listen to music you like or keep other noise out.

I believe you can add them all on. Cobra is very expensive. Also if your wife is going on long term disability i would think she would qualify for medicaid.
