i am curious of how grave really was the suffering of the widows during the time of Jesus. i do not have any reliable source here with me historically about the situation faced by the widows at the same period of the History of Israel when Jesus was preaching. i was intrigue of the words of Jesus in Luke 21:1-4. it could perhaps be one of the major economic issues of Israel at that time which can help us today to understand Biblical texts accurately. can you help me?
The only thing I can speak to on this subject is that women were not allowed to own property at the time, so if a woman's husband died, anyone with a claim on the property could essentially throw her out on the street with nothing.
They must have had a hard time. The early Christians established an arrangement to give material help to them and James 1:27 mentioned that all were to look after orphans and widows; 1 Timothy 5:3 also requested the congregation to look after them so they must have had a hard time but more importantly, they weren't supposed to be forgotten or fall thru the cracks and see a hard time.
Rabid about life
If a womans husband died she would have to beg in the streets unless she had a son to care for her. that was the importance of having a male child. I was the responsibility of the first born son to provide care for the mother.
