How can I put on weight in a healthy way?

I'm trying to put on weight. I have run a lot for the last 2 years. I'm currently around 68kg. Before I ran I was around 80kg. I would ideally like to get back to a similar weight.

Therefore, I'm going to cut down on the running and hit the gym more. Obviously I need to increase food consumption. What would be the best things to eat? I work a lot, so I need convienent meals. Eating 5 - 6 times a day I find very difficult. What simple changes would you recommend I add to my diet? At the moment I eat quite low fat but large quantities of carbs and proteins. I've started drinking a can of guinness a day already, hopefully that will make a difference!

I guess I want to know what easy meals and snacks I could make to help me increase my weight in a healthy way!

Thanks for your help!!:D

Hi,

I think that you need to drink canned Ensure.  This is a drink full of vitamins and minerals.

To gain weight I would intake more healthy fats more commonly found in fish, nuts etc. Good protein shakes work as well. I know they even have 1200 calorie shake mixes available at Vitamin World, just be sure you know what you are in taking before you buy anything. Look at reviews on the products as well. If 5-6 meals a day is not realistic for you then you might want to count calories....It may seem tedious but you get the hang of it after a bit and becomes second nature. One pound is 3500 calories so find your AMR (http://preventdisease.com/healthtools/articles/bmr.html) and add 3500 - 7000 calories per week to your diet in order to gain. You can divide the calories by 5 or in your case by 3....either way you are getting what you need.

You dont have to count forever but just until your body gets the "hint" that you are trying to pack on pounds and therefor need to eat more. Be sure to continue to eat good stuff, not the mcdonalds crap everyday....note: everyday. Moderation in all things is key.

Take things slowly as well, your body may go into shock packing on 10pounds or so per week. So I suggest adding max 7000 calories per week (max) in conjunction with your workouts....

This was a lengthy explanation but hopefully this will help ya out : )

Hello

In order to pack on some muscle weight you need to go to the gym and focus on training heavy with free-weight exercises:  squats, bench press, dead lifts, shoulder presses, dips, incline presses, barbell curls, dumbell rows, pull ups, etc.  Secondly, boost the HEALTHY FAT in you diet.  Namely, monounsaturated fat.  Simply, go to the store and buy a bottle of olive oil. It is good to cook with and goes great on salads and whole wheat pasta.  Why boost the fat intake?  It adds calories and, most importantly, it boosts your testosterone levels. Studies have shown that both monounsaturated and saturated fat boost T-levels. Unfortunately, too much saturated fat raises your LDL cholesterol and clogs your arteries.  However, monounsaturated fat is healthy and actually lowers LDL and boosts HDL.  Finally, supplement with creatine. It will add 5 pounds of muscle within a week. You can buy creatine at Wal-Mart.

I found the guide in the article probably the most helpful for packing on more body weight, it gives you all the foods and exactly when to eat and how many times a day, a real great guide for packing on weight.

You have a "dilemma" that many obese would love to have.. :) You probably have high metabolism... :) so you should try exercises that build muscle mass that means heavy weights and slow reps. protein shakes are must or else you won't put on muscle mass and probably even lose more weight... :) also i wouldn't think it's the case but have your stomach checked for worms just in case... usually those who eat a lot but don't gain weight are those with either high metabolism or have worms that eat away precious food nutrition.
