What to do in a weekend in Shanghai China on April?

Hi. I'm a 26 y/o student who's going to be in a study trip to Tongji university in Shanghai in April and will only have one free weekend to explore the region on my own.


I want to see it all: monuments, at least one buddhist monument, shopping (not really into antiquities - more into electronic and clothing). Do you think it could better to go to Hanghzou over this weekend?

I'll be staying at the university itself - If you think its necessary please recommend a nice cheap hotel also.

I am pretty sure one weekend won't be enough for this awesome city . I think you must take a cruise in Huangpu river at night, and a visit to the old town and the markets there, you can also climb the Jinmao Tower for a city view.

Along Shan Xi Nan Lu, Huai Hai Zhong Lu and Chang Shu Lu are great street for outlet cheap shopping.

The Holiday Inn in Hanghzou is a great hotel but if you are planning some real cheap traveling I would go for a youth hostel. At Lingyin temple I think you'll find one of the beautiful Buddhist temples.
