Hello:  I am in week 4 of training for a marathon ... feet falling asleep

Hello:  I am in week 4 of training for a marathon.  I'm having a terrible problem with my feet falling asleep.  Everyday around mile 2 they are like running on pins and needles.  I have great running shoes that are a half size bigger than normal.  I bought them and was professionally fit at a well known running store.  I tried not tieing the laces so tight.  Nothing is helping.  Sat is my 9 mile run.  There is NO way I can do this with the way my feet fall asleep.  I would appreciate any feedback other than the get new sneakers everyone else is saying.  I am going to try a pair that I ran a half marathon 4 years ago in and had no problem with.  I appreciate your help.  Thanks. Deb

This problem could be related to two things: improper running technique and improper shoes.

For running technique, have you ever looked into the Pose method?  check out:  www.posetech.com

And for shoes, I really wouldn't trust anyone from a running store.  They usually prescribe shoes with large heels.  My advice: go with a flat shoe - the flatter the better.  if you are running correctly, you don't need any kind of super-shoe.  The Pose site also lists some good running shoes.

Any pain or disappointment is transformed into growth and understanding.

Besides getting new shoes, you might have poor circulation. In a sitting position, place your feet flat on the floor. Start raising your heels off the floor slowly until to reach the balls of your feet (hold for 5 seconds). Continue to raise your feet until they are like a ballerina standing on her toes (hold for 5 seconds). Then slowly lower your feet to a flat position. Do this 5 times. Try it frequently during the day while you are sitting watching tv or reading. I hope this helps. Let me know how the race turned out.

rainybird,

have any of these suggestions helped? I am having the same issue when I get to 2 miles. I have tried everything with my shoes (i have nike shox). I tried different stretches, socks, and running techniques. I am a fairly new runner/jogger and I'm not sure exactly what I may be doing wrong.

Hello:

I tried every suggestion made to me.  I finally got some orthodics for the inside of my sneakers and that has seemed to work the best.  I too think I've worked my way through it in time. I no longer have this problem.  Good Luck.  Rainybird
