The closer the part of the watermelon to the stem, the sweater it would be. It happens because of the proximity to the water supply.

sorry, this is not our daily experience whilst eating water melon, it is the core which is sweet. The pulp at the core has less water and sucrose percent age is high. If the water content is high the sweetness is low. Thus hot dry season is most suitable for ripening the melon crop.
