Same water tower, one residence with hard water, one without?

We moved from our house to a temporary rental unit just down the street while our new house is being built. Both place are all on the same water tower. The house we moved from had perfect water conditions, but the rental we moved into has hard water. How can this be since both houses are on the same water tower? It doesn't make sense to me. Could it be something in the plumbing of the rental house causing the hard water? Thank you kindly, DIno

Hi

Could your house have an electric softener attached to the plumbing?  My parents house had that and so all the water was soft.  It is the most logical answer.
