My inlet water pipes rattle and make a noise after flushing the upstairs toilet. It can sometimes be calmed if I open the cold water tap in the hand basin. What's the problem

There is a possibility of a defective Ballcock Fill Valve on the one toilet that is making noise, shut the water off to that toilet and see if this helps, ball cocks can make the most horrendous of noises also it might not be that toilet.
