Though uncommon, it is possible to drink too much water. When your kidneys are unable to excrete the excess water, the electrolyte (mineral) content of the blood is diluted, resulting in a condition called hyponatremia (low sodium levels in the blood). Endurance athletes — such as marathon runners — who drink large amounts of water are at higher risk of hyponatremia. In general, though, drinking too much water is rare in healthy adults who consume an average American diet.

The key is to space out your water intake and not to drink to much to fast.

Good luck and best wishes.

Yes, too much water is dangerous, you can suffer from Water Intoxication, and to a related problem resulting from the dilution of sodium in the body, hyponatremia.

It's Not How Much You Drink, It's How Fast You Drink It

A healthy adult can process 15 liters of water a day! You are unlikely to suffer from water intoxication, even if you drink a lot of water, as long as you drink over time as opposed to intaking an enormous volume at one time. As a general guideline, most adults need about three quarts of fluid each day. Much of that water comes from food, so 8-12 eight ounce glasses a day is a common recommended intake. You may need more water if the weather is very warm or very dry, if you are exercising, or if you are taking certain medications. The bottom line is this: it's possible to drink too much water, but unless you are running a marathon or an infant, water intoxication is a very uncommon condition.

Hope this helps!

Hi,

it is certainly possible to drink too much, but 99% of the population (especially 50 years+) do not drink enough. More important is what quality of water you are drinking. Some are lugging botled water from the grocery and some of it is "prified", which frequently means run through reverse osmosis. It get very pure, but also all the minerals that we need have been removed. That kind of water is actually quite bad for you, even in small quantities.

Best regards,
Knut
