There are two competing Linux distributions that are good for slow machines.

The first one is Gentoo Linux, which is a source based distribution. Installing it requires a bit of Linux knowledge and its not recommended for newbies, but if configured correctly will give you the fastest experience optimized specifically for your old hardware.

The second option is Vector Linux, which is based on Slackware (one of the oldest distributions of Linux still available today). It has a nice textual installer and requires little to no knowledge on Linux. Be sure to download the standard edition and NOT the SOHO edition.

In both cases, you'll download an image file (.ISO file) which you need to burn and boot with. From there on each distribution's installer will help you continue and install.

If you don't know how to burn an .ISO file to a CD, check this tutorial.

Have fun!

System maintanance of Gentoo can be very time consuming, and I would't recommend it for your kids' computer unless you can't find anything else that will work on that machine, which you probably will. Gentoo will be fast, but in many cases the diference in speed is not significant. Vector is probably a better option, I don't know much about it.

for a computer for children I would also consider Edubuntu, a variant of Ubuntu linux designed for children and the education system. It may be too heavy for your system, though, being GNOME-based. In this case I would suggest trying Xubuntu, which is another variant Ubuntu linux that uses the lightweight XFCE desktop environment and will work better on older computrers. I'm pretty sure you'll be able to add all the Edubuntu packages to Xubuntu after the installation.

If none of these options does the job well enough, ask again and I hope we'll find somehting better. There's a lot of chice in the Linux world.

As sohpie said, Gentoo administration can be a bit of pain for someone without prior knowledge.

Regarding Vector Linux, its really easy to install and its optimized for older hardware so it, most definitely, work on your Pentium 2.

Hi !

I would recommend looking into GamesKnoppix.

http://games-knoppix.unix-ag.uni-kl.de/

It is in a LiveCD format so you can check it out without installing.

Have fun !
