i am irish/canadian on a j1 cultural exchange program. I would like to stay longer, can i do this??

The extension for a J1 visa is usually done in a yearly manner. You should check with your institute if they have some special regulation for  the procedure . You should apply two  months  before your current J-1 expires. You will have to state the reason for your extension and to show approval from you institute. You'll have to fill this form and apply it through your school.
