Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things.
Under certain circumstances, military veterans who served between 1940 and 2001 can be credited for special extra earnings for Social Security purposes. See this web site for details.
Very useful book for you: The Veteran's Survival Guide : How to File and Collect on VA Claims by John D. Roche. The author, a former claims adjudication specialist for the Veteran's Administration, assembles the information veterans and their dependents need to file a claim for their federal benefits. This process is slow and complicated, and the VA is not helpful to those pursuing their rights. Roche concentrates on instructing readers in the key elements for securing benefits: constructing a "well-grounded claim" and complying with claims procedures. In plain language, he provides detailed descriptions of the steps involved and illustrates the discussion with examples and cautions.
The short answer is no or maybe. As a veteran, if I were you I would not mess with SS and start your claim(s) for Compensation from the VA. There's a question you need to answer first however. Is your disability "Service Related"? If yes then John Roche's book in his answer yesterday sounds like a good direction for you. The book might be a bit dated as he talks to your claim being "Well grounded". That term went away in 2000. I too have a book out there for folks like us titled Our naked veterans - see www.haroldhester.com. I fought the SS and VA war (along with Vietnam) and now 100%. Richard, which ever direction you take you are in a long fight so sit back and relax and start reading. If you don't like to read, drop me a line at mapmak8376@aol.com and I will walk you through the elephant grass. Hess
