I've bought a necklace designated as "cultured pearls" on eBay; however, each bead has a little ridge that looks as if it were molded rather than grown in an oyster. The seller is not forthcoming with info. Can anyone shed any light on this question for me?

It seems like you have a cultured pearl necklace, but the shape on which the pearl was cultured was not round or the oyster does not produce round pearls (in which case you have an original pearl).  It is not that rare and the pearls are probably fresh water cultured.
