You should never download something you don't know the sende because they can infect you and then try to sell you the cure. Just purchase a software you know and get the updates from them to be safe. Ask for free and get this type of thing. Who will provide a free program when they can sell it? Why should they give it for free? To sell you the fix. Sorry.

You are correct.  This is a trick.  The website you visited had tried to sell you anti-virus software by making you think that your computer is infected.  Having said this, there are indeed free antivirus programs that you can download, but you have to go to the correct websites to get it.  There are many more sound-alike websites that would try to trick you into buying the program for a fee.

I am currently using the free AVG anti-virus on my Windows xp and it has been doing a very good job.  I also have the free Spybot Search and Destroy software that can detect other malwares.  Like I said, getting to the correct websites can be a bit tricky.

Smile, it's contagious!

AVG free is a very good program.  Used it myself for awhile until I decided to purchase AVG for my Vista Home Premium.  They never tell you that you are infected.  Or, try to force you to buy their paid version.   Perhaps it is time for you to look elsewhere.  Avast is another I heard that offers free download.  Not familiar with it but, it is just another choice.  No matter which one you decide to use always be careful with anything downloaded.   Also, you might want to try an optimizer to keep your computer 'clean'.  Good luck.

All those sites tell you your computer is in terrible shape. I know, I've been taken in by many of them, but I always hit "delete" when they try to sell their cure.

Buy a reputable, effective anti-virus program like Norton or McAfee. You won't regret it. If you shop around you can find some good deals on cost.

I also recommend the free Spybot program in addition to the Norton and McAfee. See Spybot.com.

Its a hoax. Download the free malware bytes, install and run a scan to remove the hoax software. Then purchase some reputable AV from a reputable company. The best at present are:

bitdefender
kaspersky
eset nod32
