From what I know it's not necessary but it helps speed up the process and it also helps to make sure the package arrives safely.

i worked for the post office.  although it isnt necessary, it does speed up the process.  BUT i do know, if you are unsure of a zip code, you are better off leaving it blank-do not put a zip if you are not sure! either your sure or you leave it blank. :-)
