Why is there a two year waiting period for medical if you are getting social securtiy disabilty insurance

Why is it that if you worked your whole life and become disabled and start receiving social security disablity insurance you have to wait two years to get medical coverage yet if you never worked a day in your life you can get medical right a way


Please contact your congressman and senators to pass h.R.1708 ending the medicare disability waiting period. Americans are dieing because of this two year waiting period>

During this two year period, you should have been covered under health insurance through your employer. COBRA .is offered, However, this is all too often too expensive to maintain in your crisis.

I feeel your pain as it happened to me also.

I worked for Catholic Health Assoc. Mercy Hospital) and they are considered non-profit and under law do not have to offer COBRA and they don't for their employees

Interesting kkpepsi, and this may be because of their non-profit status.  Mine involved, Roadway Express, under a Teamster Contract - quite different, I would agree.

On a second thought, the original post -  Are they receiving true Disability from SS or SSI as they did not have sufficient quarters to qualify for SS.  Also did their employer have insurance or were they a contractor, self employed, or a non-participant in the employers plan?
