Fertility Stories - infertility experiences of people like you.

First of all - babies under a year of age should NEVER be given honey.

Some babies suffer more gas than others. If the mother is breastfeeding, she can avoid foods that cause more gas (e.g., broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage). There are also medications that can be given to children with each meal to reduce the amount of gas (usually including simethicone - I would stay away from homeopathic treatments, because none of them are medically proven to work).

What seemed to work best for my children (I have 5, including twins) was to gently but firmly bend their knees up to their chests, putting just the right amount of pressure on their stomach to help the gas find its way out (not recommended right after a meal...).

Good luck!

You didn't mention how old are they, but assuming that they are infants I suggest the following measures-

The most common mistake done while feeding babies is doing it in the wrong angle,so pay attention for keeping a 45 degree angle while feeding. Don't feed too much and give them a burp brake once in while, do it vertically. If all of the above doesn't help, try changing the bottle or nipples.

Try giving them some fennel tea.

Brew the tea, let cool and put it in the bottle. You might want to sweeten it with a little honey, though it's not necessary with young babies in my opinion.*

Try to find out what in their diet causes the gas, as it can be very painful. Also remember that no metter what you do, there will probably be gas...

Following Rachel Inbar's comment - of course she is right and honey should not be given to young babies.

depending on how old they are, if they are babies you can use sniffing tabaco - lik your little fingure, dip it gently in the tabaco and rub put some on thier belly button,

tea - you can make caraway tea and let them drink, boil a few seeds and after it cools down take the seeds out, and let them drink the tea.

hope it helps

Thanks Rachel. Bending the knees and pressure on the stomach really works so good.

Hi Rachel,

As a first time mom, I always wonder if "gas" refers to burping or "the other end".  My baby has massive burping issues and is constantly waking up because of this, even when I burp him and keep him upright for half an hour after feeding.  All this to ask, does the legs to chest movement work for burping?

Thanks,

Emily
