How do i turn the water off on a elongated flush valve toilet ???

I have a elongated flush valve toilet w/ no tank the lever is on the left and the handle is dripping how do i turn the water off ? I was told to remove the bolt from the right of the handle and turn it right...but it keeps turning how far do i turn the screw until the water is turned off ?
