I thought that I was in love in the past, and was mistaken. I don’t understand how I could have been so wrong at the time. How do I know when it’s true love?

you will know when its true love, when you would do anything for that special someone. When you love that special someone unconditional. when you can stop asking yourself "do i love him/her" or "does he/she love me" that is when you know that its true love.
