My son planted a new apple tree for me and he said ...

My son planted a new apple tree for me and he said that the bottom half of the roots broke off when he pulled it out of the nursery container. I am now worried that it will not live and can find no information about it. Does anyone have any information for me about the root system and how it will be affected?

Normally when you are planting an apple tree you should do the following:

  1. Hydrate the roots by soaking them in a pail of water for about an hour before planting.
  2. Using a sharp pruning shears, trim any broken or crossed roots and shorten all roots to about 18-inches long.

  4. Gently spread the roots in the hole. Hold the tree in place, keeping the graft union 2 to 3-inches above ground.

 If you are able to do this, the tree should be okay.

I planted the tree even though most of the potted soil fell off. So far the tree is doing very nicely. Of course It takes time to find out how well it will do because it has to settle and get to growing. I live in a real hot high desert area and in the summer it gets into the hundreds of degrees, so I hope it will take root by then. Thank you for the support, I just had to wait to see what happened

Thank you for the answer to the tree question. I did not do it the way you suggested but then maybe the potted soil falling off the tree did it for me...lol . It seems to be doing fine so far now if I can keep the Gophers away it will be swell . We did cage the roots.

I surely will...I do not know how long it will take to take root but my ecperience in Ramona is a year should tell me if it will survive...lol isn't that just amazing? Thanks for the interest.

Just a note to say that so far my apple tree is looking great! The hot weather is coming soon so I hope it continues to do wonderfully...
