I just bought 2 Himalayan White Birch trees (Betula Jacquemontii) and now I'm reading conflicting reports on the internet. One site says they're short-lived, but not how short a time period that is. Another says they're difficult to maintain because the roots need to be cool/shady while the leaves warm/sunny. But it doesn't say if underplanting is recommended. I know they have shallow roots but how shallow? Will underplanting of small shrubs compete too much for water? Does anyone in western WA have one of these trees that is established? If so, what are the conditions under which it's growing?
Any wisdom/advice would be greatly appreciated!
