Oklahoma approves $4 billion transportation...

www.EmploymentCrossing.com The Oklahoma Transportation Commission has approved a $4 billion program to improve roads, replace 449 deficient bridges and finish relocating Oklahoma Citys busy, trouble-prone Crosstown Expressway. It provides the final $194 million needed to push the Crosstown, an elevated section of Interstate 40, south to an alignment along the Oklahoma River, opening up land for development between the shore and the city's core. The highway will also be expanded to 10 lanes. The project is to be finished in 2012. Over the last several years, the Crosstown has undergone frequent repairs. Holes sometimes open in the road deck, dropping concrete to the ground below. Some observers are concerned that the current structure may collapse before the work can be completed. "I'm not going to say that it's impossible, but I am going to say it is highly unlikely," Transportation Director Gary Ridley told the Associated Press. Ridley travels on the Crosstown to and from work. Originally built in 1965, the expressway carries 120,000 vehicles a day, almost 50,000 more than its intended capacity of 72,000. The program will also fund numerous road improvements. To find a road construction job in Oklahoma, click here.

The Importance of Fall Car Care

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, Americans drove 62.6 billion fewer miles since last November than the previous year. As budgets tighten and car pools and public transportation gain popularity, drivers often put off routine car maintenance. Although replacement and servicing of many components are based on miles driven, vehicles that are driven less still need basic care. Performing regular maintenance can prevent breakdowns and save drivers money. Industry experts recommend four maintenance items while driving a vehicle less: 1. Check tire pressure monthly and rotate using specified manufacturer's maintenance schedule. 2. Check and maintain fluid levels of engine coolant, engine oil and wiper fluid. 3. Check battery life, replace or charge your current battery and make sure battery terminals are corrosion-free. 4. Check exterior conditions of a vehicle if it's sitting outside, removing leaves and snow pile-up. Produced for General Motors

Transportation tax critical to Rail Runner

20-million bucks a year. That's how much money the rail runner needs to keep running in less than a month -- voters will decide if they want to pay for it with a new sales tax. But what if it doesn't pass? We asked the governor just that. Jeff maher's live near paseo del norte at the journal center station with tonight's top story. If the vote fails in november, the governor is going to have to figure out how he's going to come up with the money. 'I would like for it to keep on running, so whatever it takes for it to run I guess I would vote for that' ON ELECTION DAY, RAIL RUNNER OFFICIALS WILL BE HOPING VOTERS IN VALENCIA, BERNALILLO, SANDOVAL AND SANTE FE COUNTIES WILL SAY YES TO A TRANSPORTATION TAX. It's an eighth of a cent sales tax -- or about twelve cents on every hundred dollars you spend. But it would give the rail runner almost 16 million of the 20 million dollars a year it needs to keep on riding -- the rest will come from the state and from train tickets. 'and if this was not to pass, I would assume that the legislature and the governor would get together and look at how else to maybe put together the funds and make it work'GOVERNOR RICHARDSON SAYS IF IT COMES DOWN TO IT, HE'LL FIND A WAY TO KEEP THE RAIL RUNNER GOING 'well if it doesn't pass, and I am confident it will, we're going to keep going, we either go to the federal government, the congress, we go back to the state, I go back to the legislature, the legislature has been generous' IN RESPONSE TO THE GOVERNOR'S COMMENT, DEMOCRATIC STATE SENATOR JOHN ARTHUR SMITH SAYS 'THE GOVERNOR IS RECOGNIZING THE SEVERITY OF THE TIMES WHEN HE'S LOOKING AT ALL THOSE OTHER SOURCES. I think we will do everything we can if the resources are there and if the economy turns around, but our primary concerns are with healthcare, education, and the prison system' the rail runner costs about ten- million dollars a year to operate right now. That number will double after the santa fe extension is completed in december. They're averaging 3500 riders a day, and they expect that number to triple with the santa fe extension. Live in northwest albuquerque. Jeff maher. Eyewitness news four. If passed -- that transportation tax would generate more than 30 million dollars a year in valencia...Bernalil lo ...Sandoval and santa fe counties. As we mentioned about half -- or just shy of 16 million dollars -- would go the rail runner. The other half would go to other public transportation projects --- such as new buses and bus routes -- and to road projects.
