Do you put money in a tip jar if it's a self service kind of establishment (like Starbucks)?
I'm not entirely sure myself, though usually I put some change in the jar.
I think it's totally up to you. To be perfectly honest, people like those who work in Starbucks get a decent salary... it's not like they're getting paid $2 an hour and rely on tips to make their living, like those who work in restaurants. If the person who waited on you was super-nice, or if you get to know someone who works there and want to help them out, then sure... leave some change, but really you don't need to feel obligated.
I happen to know a couple of guys that work there , it gives them a good feeling and myself as well. Sometimes they treat me with an extra cup so I guess the good you do finds it's way back to you. Once I even saw them help a person who was short with the change .
