I am a poor student who likes to swim but can not afford an underwater radio, now I was wandering if there is something constructive I can do ( mentally that is ) while I swim instead of getting bored.

You will be surprised ho similar swimming is to yoga , just find some yoga instructor and work with him for a while , I was surprised how it changed my swimming . Here is a relevant
