It's important to understand what it means to have a genetic predisposition. It simply means that in research conducted it was found, that people who's parents had clinical depression were more likely to suffer from it as well. More likely could mean simply that the percentage was a bit higher. It certainly doesn't mean, by any means, that the trait will pass on. There are other very important factors and it still isn't completely clear how all these factors interact.

I wouldn't worry to much about this issue. Better to invest time and resources in raising children in a happy way that will be healthful for them. physical and mental.

The answer my friend is blowing in the wind....

No... I really don't think so.  I think that most cases of depression are not a result of just chemicals in one's brain.  The depression is a result of some sort of combination of events or things in a person's life that is bothering them to the point of depression.  This could be anything from a death in the family, to breaking up with a boyfriend/girlfriend.  I think that depression is a very personal thing, and depends on a person's personal life.

According to empirical reseraches (see references at National Institute of Mental health at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Institute_of_Mental_Health) there probably is a genetic predisposition to major depression. However, depression has a lot to do also with many other factors such as nutrition, stressful live events, and psychological background.

Unfortunately it can be passed on since it has been shown to run in families. Depression is generally treated by medication to get the right chemical balance.

Is the comfort of Lord, GOD small within you?

Yes, I think it is a learned trait, as well as, a biological trait.  Children of adults who are depressed need to recognize the signs so that history does not repeat itself.
