How can I tell if my friend is depressed?

My friend has been staying at home a lot and not wanting to hang out or go out as much. She has called in sick from work several times over the last month. She has been going through a lot lately and I am worried that she is depressed. I do not know that much about depression and do not want to jump to any conclusions too quickly. How can I tell if she is depressed. How can I help her?

Only a trained practitioner can diagnose depression. Your friend may not want to go on her own but you should offer to accompany her to visit a psychiatrist. Most forms of depression are treatable with medication.
