What techniques were used in styling hair for movie star's in the 1940's like Grace Kelly?

I'm interested in the way hair was done in the 1940's. Glamorous, soft, perfect waves and completely in place. Hair dressed like Grace Kelly, Lana Turner, Rita Hayworth and now Katherine Heigel. Can you tell me a little bit about how they styled the Star's hair.
