First tattoo

I am thinking about getting a tattoo, but because it is so permanent i want it to really mean something to me but im having issues with my different ideas. I want it to represent where i am now and i have recently given up ski racing - and i was thinking of a snowflake. but at the same time i strongly believe in pursuing what you want and was toying with the idea of getting a quote, either ; "mountains can be crumbled to atoms" or "do not go gentle into that good night" anyone have any opinions also on locations for the tattoo???

Not sure If my answer will help. But here it goes anyway. Myself being a guy, I don't like tattooes on a ladies arms, shoulders, or chest region. However, I think a tattoo on the lower back region, and/or the ankle is quite sexy. However, if you are a guy that had posted the question, then ignore the answer, an just pick any ol place. For the tattoo itself, it's always better to just go with something that truly represents who you are, or what you like. Always sleep on it. Sleep on it a few times. Have it drawn on paper, and place it where you want it and try to imagine how you would like it. Hope this helps!

Smile, it's contagious!

Before doings this be absolutely certain. It will be as you say permanent! When your fifty, sixty, ninety, 100 y/o that darn tattoo will still be there. Should you be unfortunate to require surgery on body part where tattoo is it could become marred by scar, or vanish in part or whole by a skin graft. Unsightly in eyes of others in professional setting. It could even prevent you from obtaining that dream job if visible. Will you always and forever feel the same 'tomorrow as you do today' about the decision to get tattoo and the design? How do your mother/ b/f / spouse / children / co-workers feel about it? Is the artist qualified to give tattoos? How experienced is he? How good is his work (art skills and tattooing skills)? Do you know how to care for skin while healing from process? If not, you better learn. Enough of the negativity. Now for the positive. Go for it! If your brave enough to do it!

My sister has tattoos on her stomach, upper chest, arm, ankle and back and she is now regretting ever having had them done so I will join in with the "think long and hard" school of thought. She has to cover them up for work (as Citrine pointed out, some people do find them unsightly and they could hinder your chances for jobs in some professions; my sister experienced that, as well). She also had to deal with a pretty serious infection after the last one. Could you try a temporary one for awhile to see how much you really like it? If you decide to go ahead, try to keep it small and on a part of the body where it will be difficult to see when you are wearing your normal attire. Also, please check out the tattoo artist carefully to be sure he or she does a good job and also keeps his/her needles and equipment very clean. In addition to infection, some people have developed hepatitis from contaminated needles.

Having a tattoo is a BIG thing because if you get one and you thought 'oh this will be great!' you might get it and you might be bummed. Now if you do get one, the snowflake might be a good choice,  My mom got a tattoo of a snake on her leg and a tattoo on her arm and now she is a banker and she cant show her arm or leg, and she is really sad now. So make sure you know what you truly want.

The best thing to do for you first tattoo is to cover all your bases.  What I mean by that is research the right tattoo design that will suit your body and lifestyle.  Try find a online tattoo site that shows the picture and then the finished article.

Hi Snowangel90,

You are right to be so cautious about what tattoo you get, but don't fall into never deciding on what you want to get. A tattoo is a beautiful work of art. It shows passion, commitment and reflects who you are. Just like a marriage, it is a commitment for life. It takes a lot of searching before you find any cool tattoo designs you want to commit yourself too. I have a website that helps people who are looking to get their first (or even latest) tattoo, that way they don't fall into something they will regret down the road, if you would be interested in looking at it, I would completely suggest it. You can find it at http://cooltattoodesigns.info There are many places to find various cool tattoo designs, most noteably is in the actual tattoo parlor themselves. A lot of people simply walk into a tattoo parlor and look into a book and pick out a design for the artist to draw. A lot of times however; these designs just don't look good and lack staying power which later leads to regret and very expensive removal procedures. I always tell people consider getting a tattoo like getting (re-)married. So make sure you DON'T make a spontaneous decision, make sure you are 100% sure about the tattoo you are committing too, but don't give up on finding the right one for you either! That webste again is http://cooltattoodesigns.info
