Does our taste get "set" around the age of 20?

I noticed a long time ago that the music I listen to is more or less the music I listened to when I was 18-23 years old. Mostly I still listen to the same artists I liked back then, but I also listen to other artists from that period that I didn't like "in real time". I hardly listen to newer stuff at all.

Recently I also noticed that I don't like actors and actresses from the new generation, I much prefer those who became stars when I was around 20 years old. So I started thinking maybe it's like that, that we kinda lose our openness at some stage and stay fixated on what we already like?

Qué tal?

That's an interesting question.

I don't know if it's possible to design a psychological experiment to test this theory, there are far too many factors that can interfere. But if you're interested in people's personal experiences, I personally listen to a lot of electronic music today, that I wasn't so keen on listening to around the age of 20. However, I find that my favourite electronic tracks happen to be those that were released when I was around the age of 20...

Of course, this may be just a coincidence. Or maybe those tracks were played at parties I went to around the age of 20, and although I wasn't listening to them at home, listening to them again invokes old memories?

Or maybe it's not so much about the artists or the style, but the quality of production, or the level of commercialism, or some other qualities that change with time in the music industry and that our collective ears get used to without us even knowing...

You may have a point there, it's the same for me, but to a lesser extent. I think it happens to many people with cars too, you know? Things like "who needs all those Evos and STis, give me an Integrale!".
