Talk about where you grew up, people who have influenced you in your life, hopes and dreams.  Talk about things that you are passionate about, minus religion and politics, save that for later.  Talk about subjects that help you get to know your date in a not too terribly personal way, remember to maintain some humor to defuse the awkward situation of a first meeting.  You want to ask questions that will help you obtain knowledge about who they are and where they might be going in life.  This way you'll at least know if you'd like to get to know them better down the road.
