What to talk about on a first date?

I have to agree with Lilly on this one. It's not ideal to act cocky and goofy on a first date, as the whole point of the date is to get to know one another. 

It's ideal to get a general idea of their background, ie. their profession, age (if ladies don't mind admitting it), and where they live.

More often than not, asking a lady questions about herself is a great way to start a first date. By asking her a question about herself, you put the ball in her court while at the same time, you have the opportunity to really get to know her. Make sure you're present though, and really listening, because women can tell when a guy is asking a question and doesn't really care about the answer. It's also not bad if there's an occassional light-hearted joke (not at the expense of anyone though!) if you naturally have a funny side.

I disagree, the whole purpose of a first date is to get to know one another a little bit better - if you talk about nothing and just act cocky and funny, then you totally missed the point of the date, she didn't get to know you, and you, probably so busy being witty didn't get to know her.

I would suggest to avoid talking about really intimate things (leave the early life traumas, the story about your ex and the plans for the future aside for a bit) talk about your hobbies, the books and movies you like, if you have any pets you can talk about that. Positive personal experience are also good - if you went on an interesting trip or had interesting learning \ life changing experience.

more important then making a list of topics  is remember to be present and listen. Try to enjoy the conversation and the company, if you are feeling relaxed and like you are having fun, it would come out in your speech and behavior no matter what you talk about. 

Topics to avoid:

money (If you have it, I know you want to impress but it's really too obvious and boring), ex relationships, family, medical problems, cars.

Music and movies are always good topics.Funny or embarrassing stories about yourself show you have a good sense of humor and you're confident.Stay away from the topic of exes...no matter what and keep your cell phone on vibrate.Don't be generic,be your own unique self.

Talk about where you grew up, people who have influenced you in your life, hopes and dreams.  Talk about things that you are passionate about, minus religion and politics, save that for later.  Talk about subjects that help you get to know your date in a not too terribly personal way, remember to maintain some humor to defuse the awkward situation of a first meeting.  You want to ask questions that will help you obtain knowledge about who they are and where they might be going in life.  This way you'll at least know if you'd like to get to know them better down the road.

First dates should be exciting and scary.  Guaranteed, the women is thinking the same thing in her head.  My suggestion to you would be as follows:

-if there was an agreement to the date, then you would have to agree with me that you both are somewhat attracted to the other and probably have some things in common, so already that is a plus and should keep the date flowing. You can talk about anything (books, music, jobs, life, food, movies are a big one, etc...)

-Basically any topic that crosses your head EXCEPT THE FOLLOWING:

-Id steer clear of the eX talk. And if it does come up, please do not go on and on about how awful your last ex was; make sure you mention that she was a great person but it did not work out.

 Oh and also, please remember to ask her questions and act interested about her life (girls love that).
