Monoshock, older style, regular swingarm

In 1977, the first monoshock system appeared to niche markets and racers. It has actually been around in one form or another since the 1930's, but it was only in the early 80's that monoshocks started to appear on production bikes. Monoshock is actually a Yamaha trademark, but it has become synonymous with the design in the same way as people in the UK refer to vacuum cleaners as hoovers. (The Honda version is called Pro-Link). The premise was that manufacturers could save some weight by redesigning the rear suspension and removing one of the coilover units. Monoshocks are still coilovers, but there's only one and it's mounted centrally to the swingarm. On earlier models, the rear swingarm was a sort of basket with a linkage at the top-front. The monoshock sat nearly horizontal in the bike.

Swingarm is the main part of the rear suspensions in a bicycle or a bike.

It holds the rear axle and attached to the frame in a pivot point, and absorbs road bumps.

Monoshock swingarm - means it utilizes only one shock to absorbs the bumps. The shock is attached from the swingarm to the frame.

Well....again ;-) I was not asking about the swingarm itself but rather about a monoshock swingarm...your answer is too simplistic since all bicycle with dual suspensions have only ONE shock....

If you read the other answer you will see that this is borrowed from the motorbike conept world where there are possibilities for more than a single shock and that explains it.

Hey, I was only trying to help.

Since you didn't give too much details in your question I explained both terms "swingarm" and "monoshock swingarm" - the term is simple and so does the answer.

BTW not all bikes with rear suspension have only one shock, for example  cannondale gemini have a new double rear suspension system ;-)

No hard feelings I hope...just tried to focus you.

Cannondale Gemini? Where did you see that? Cannondale Gemini is a dying line...as far as I know....the judge is his replacement... and in any case I did not find anything about it on Cannondale's site.

Ironically I found this at MBAction.COM site  :)

You are right, this is a prototype which (I think) was never on production.

I also can't find the year of this article. I wonder if it was published before any Gemini production or later...
