Dr. Chan Chang-chuan says: "These masks are ineffective. Much of the pollution in the form of gases and particulates is so tiny that a simple mask has a low filtration rate. Besides, . . . they are not airtight. So they give a false sense of security."

Many people use surgical masks in different places. Here are some more examples:

SANTIAGO, Chile - Chile's capital, home to some of Latin America's foulest air, is losing ground in its battle against pollution after hard-won gains in the 1990s.

On a recent Saturday, Luis Mariano Rendon, a lawyer and ecologist, led a group of 20 to 40 bicyclists wearing surgical masks in a 12-hour bike ride in circles around the government palace in the heart of Santiago, to push for cleaner air.

Debbie Carlin concedes, but occasionally wearing a hospital surgical mask outdoors was the only way she could finish mowing her yard.

"The fumes get to be that bad," says the South Park homeowner.

Check carefully what exactly you have seen on TV, because most people in Japan wear a surgical mask when they are sick in order not to distribute germs to others.

(In a way you could say that they wear masks to protect others agains their own pollution...).

I personally don't find Tokyo very polluted. Remember it's right on the ocean side, quite windy. But yes - some downtown trafic areas especially in the summer can become dense with exhaust.

I came to this world with nothing and I leave with nothing but love

These masks are not suited against pollution and the main reason is simple: these masks are designed to protect others from droplets you might spread.

When these masks are tested, the filtration is measured from the air you exhale and not the one you breathe in. Even if they can slightly reduce the risk of infections through droplets, they are definitely not a suitable solution against air pollution.Smile
