This question if for the med sensitive or those who know about it. I heard there are sulfates in meds that we wouldn't think there were, that would act as an allergen (if applicable to the person) that would cause this sensitivity. Does anyone know anything about this?

Hi, I hope we get some more answers. They should put my picture under adverse drug effects in the dictionary :)  I was talking to a relative recently who told me she had the same problem and this is what they came up with.

TWM, Did a little research. Check out this site: http://allergies.about.com/od/foodallergies/a/sulfites.htm

They are a preservative in food, alcohol and medications.

I am sorry if you are having allergy issues. I work as a pharmacy sales rep for a reputable pharmacy and if you haven't found the answer yet, I would gladly ask one of our pharmacists. Please let me know and best of luck!

Cathy, that would be greatly appreciated. I understand that they put sulfites in to extend the shelf life of the medication. Could you ask what drugs they put them in...is it in all of them? I hear it's even in the epi-pen. Though they strongly suggest that it not be with-held. Did I spell that right? Oh well, Thank you. Donna

As a pharmacist, the answer is available. However Yedda continues to abuse their privileges by sending question to the wrong address.

There are sulfates and sulfites. There are not totally identical compounds. Sulphites are used mostly as a preservative, while sulphates are structures within the sulphur as an antibiotic. Sulphites can trigger allergies and asthma.
