What stories are great for children that highlight effort?

I have been thinking a lot about the stories that I read to our son.  He has stories about being accepting of differences, about talent, learning words and numbers, how to be kind to animals and friends, about being a hero...but something is missing.

There are not any stories about achievement and effort.  There are stories about being smart, but then of course, he wants easy tasks so he can be called smart.  We have started with the Little Engine that could, but there has to be more good books like this.

Are there any good children's books about doing the best you can  that anyone can recommend?

The Horatio Alger stories might be a little old for him if he is at the Little Engine level of reading, but they are about achievement and making an effort to improve yourself.  Many of his books for boys are available on the internet for free.

Don't know how old your child is but we read "Wizard of Oz" one chapter every night at bedtime when my daughter was around four.  Oldie but goodie!
