A:

Perhaps you should realize that there truly is, "nothing on."

I am not really sure how you can encourage yourself to limit your television viewing, other than to get control of your behavior.

Who's in charge, anyway... You? Or the boob tube?

Here's what I suggest you try:

~ How many televisions do you own? If you have more than one, get rid of all except ONE. You don't need more than one television; you only have one pair of eyes.

~ If you are in the habit of lounging comfortably in front of the television, make it harder on yourself to do so. Remove your usual cushy chair (or turn it upside down). If you want to watch t.v. you'll either have to sit on a kitchen chair or stand up. You won't enjoy either for any length of time.

~If you are also in the habit of using the remote to click-click-click through a myriad of channels, remove (and discard) the batteries from the remote. This forces you to manually change the channels; which gets a little old in short order. You'll either choose something and stick with it or get a LOT of exercise walking back and forth to the television!

Finally, take some time for a little introspection. What are you lacking (or avoiding) in your life that you choose to spend so much of it in front of the television? Your viewing habits can be construed as avoidance or self-medicating (as with any other addiction); if you think about it and suspect there is an underlying problem, please seek professional counseling.

Good luck!
