If the status (diplomatic) of my passport changes do I need to get a new visa even if the previous one is valid?

If I have a diplomatic passport (because I am a diplomat's dependent) with a valid US F-1 visa (which expires 3 years later) but it expires and I have to get an ordinary passport, will I have to get a new visa for the new passport (since the status of the passport has changed from diplomatic to ordinary)? In that case, can I remain in the US after my passport has expired, or should I get a new passport and then apply for another F-1 visa within the US?
