how to use unlocked cell phones
If I buy an unlocked phone, does putting the SIM card from my present phone into the new phone activate it completely ?

An unlocked phone just means it's not tied to a specific network. If your SIM card is compatible and they will allow it on their network you should be fine other than some phone features possibly not working at all, or correctly.
