Can someone on ssi be made to pay money in a civil suit ?

I was caught shoplifting in fred meyers store here in Oregon . First time,

no criminal charges or police were called.  I got a letter stating they want 359 dollars. I"m on S.S.I disablitity with a 673 dollar a month income.  If they sue me, can they take my ssi money that I use to live on ?  I did a stupid thing, but I don't have that kind of money, if I did, I wouldn't be shoplifting food in the first place.

Smile, it's contagious!

Your monies can be garnished at a low % until all fines are paid in full.  Just because your on SSI doesn't mean you don't have to pay for your crime.  If that were the case think of how high the crime rate would shoot with many recipients stealing 'cause they can get away with it and never pay.

You need to arrange some kind of payment plan with them. The fact that you're on SSI has no bearing whatsoever on their case. But if you talk to them to try to at least make some effort to pay, they may be understanding. I would, however, like to know what the money they want is for. If their merchandise was returned to them, they have no basis to charge you anything, and if no case was filed in court, they have no judgement against you. So it's very necessary that you discover exactly what this money is for.
