Why were some sports dropped from the olympics?

I know there are sports that were Olympic sports in the past but they aren't now, like cricket and polo. But I couldn't find out why they were dropped from the Olympic program. The official website of the Olympic Movement didn't help, and either did Wikipedia. Why were they dropped?
