The Dialysis Itch From Hell...My son has been on dialysis for 6 months now. 3 months ago he developed a horrible itch that sends him crazy and prevents him from sleeping at nights. His potassium and phosphate levels are sound, a visit to the dermatologist was to no avail, no suggestions of lotions and potions from this quarter helped . We have tried neem oil, chickweed lotion, rescue remedy, surely someone must have found something that helps. The renal technicians have double flushed the machine before use, used preservative free heparin..no change. Does anybody know what else he can try?

Hi.. I work in dialysis.  I am a pct.  If everything is sound like you said, his potassium is ok, and he is taking his phosphate binders like he should.  Does the clinic use reuse dialysers? Or each time he gets a new dialyser?  Make sure they double rinse the dialyser, some people can become very sensitive to certain fibers in the dialyser.  You may ask about a different kind.  I work for fresenius. Ask your dr.  He should be able to recommend one.  Hope this helps. Pam

Hi Pam thanx heaps for your reply. We are in New Zealand and dialysers are not re-used, a new one is used every session. We use a F80 Dialyser.Could you recommend another?.Thank you very much:)

We have a pt. here that is sensitive to the fibers.  We have used a T-220 for years and also now he is using a am-bio-100 dialyzer.  Ask his Dr. if he can try these.  Best of luck to you and your son. =)

Pamela you beauty....he has dialysis today so he will ask for these...thanks so much for your time...it's a funny thing...here in NZ I have found the technicians are the one's that have been the most helpful not the doctors. The technicians have worked around the world and have had one on one with the patients so have seen the different responses patients have had whilst on dialysis...there is one Indian technician in particular that had seen a patient react just like my son. He found the preservative free heparin for my boy and trialled that and then suggested the other day that he'll go for changing the dialyser for him so now we have a starting point for specifics...We'll keep you informed of the progress...once again thanx for your time...Trish and Free xxxxxx

Great! Hope it all works out.  Make sure that any dialyzer he uses is rinsed out with at least one bag of saline first.  =)
